A world traveler, her love was always for New York City. Winnie was also known for keeping her mind sharp, always having a pen and the Newsday game section on hand- as well as a fierce competitor during family game nights. Forever active, she could be found walking for miles with sister Maureen or striking a yoga pose at the local YMCA. Winnie was a beloved and devoted mother, grandmother of 10 and great grandmother of 2. They were avid sailors and frequently traversed the Great South Bay with their monohull poignantly named “Wynnjim”. James and Winnie settled in East Islip, NY, and after several years of transience between Florida, New York, and California, returned to Islip. She married James Edward Kane, now deceased, in 1957 and went on to raise four boys: Chris, William (deceased), Robert, and Thomas. Luke’s Elementary and Aquinas High School in the Bronx, NY graduating in 1955, and later graduated from Suffolk Community College. She was raised by parents Anna and James Garvin who in the early 1930’s immigrated to the United States from Ireland, Counties Roscommon and Tyrone respectively. Winnie, the oldest of 3, was born on November 16, 1937, in Bronx, NY. WINIFRED "WINNIE" ELIZABETH KANE, age 85, passed away in the early hours of February 10th, 2023 at South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore, NY. A memorial service will be held during the summer.
